5 Easy and Fun STEM Activities for Kids to Try at Home

Engaging children in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) home activities can be fun and educational. At Respire Learning, we emphasize experiential learning through our state-of-the-art fully equipped STEM labs and robotics labs with various hands-on learning kits & Models. Here are five simple and exciting STEM activities you can easily do at home with your kids!

1. How to Make a Lava Lamp at Home

Materials:

  • A clear bottle or jar
  • Water
  • Vegetable oil
  • Food coloring
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets

Steps:

  1. Fill the bottle with water until it's about one-quarter full.
  2. Add a few drops of food colors to the water.
  3. Fill the rest of the bottle with vegetable oil.
  4. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into pieces and drop them in one by one.

Play & Learn: Watch the colorful bubbles dance through the oil, creating a mesmerizing lava lamp effect. This activity teaches kids about the density and immiscibility of liquids and the chemical reaction between the tablet and water.

2. Instant Snow DIY

Materials:

  • Sodium polyacrylate (available in disposable diapers)
  • Water
  • Bowl

Steps:

  1. Extract the sodium polyacrylate from the diaper.
  2. Place the powder in a bowl.
  3. Slowly add water and watch as it expands to create fluffy, instant snow.

Play & Learn: Create instant snow that feels cool and looks natural! This activity demonstrates the absorbent properties of polymers and is a fantastic way to explore chemical reactions.

3. Hot and Cold Balloon Experiment

Materials:

  • Balloons
  • Hot water
  • Cold water
  • Two large bowls

Steps:

  1. Inflate a balloon and tie it off.
  2. Fill one bowl with hot water and another with cold water.
  3. Place the balloon in the hot water and then in the cold water.

Play & Learn: Observe how the balloon expands in hot water and shrinks in cold water. This experiment helps children understand the effects of temperature on gas molecules and the principles of thermal expansion and contraction.

4. Make a Tissue Paper Parachute

Materials:

  • Tissue paper
  • String
  • A small toy or weight
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Steps:

  1. Cut a square piece of tissue paper.
  2. Attach a piece of string to each corner.
  3. Tie the strings to a small toy or weight.
  4. Drop the parachute from a height and watch it float down.

Play & Learn: Craft a simple parachute and learn about gravity and air resistance. This activity is a great way to explore fundamental physics and engineering principles while having fun with creative design.

5.Write Secret Messages with Invisible Ink

Materials:

  • Lemon juice or baking soda solution
  • Q-tips or paintbrush
  • White paper
  • A light bulb or heat source

Steps:

  1. Dip the Q-tip in lemon juice or baking soda solution and write a message on the paper.
  2. Let the paper dry completely.
  3. To reveal the message, hold the paper near a light bulb or heat source (be careful not to burn the paper).

Play & Learn: Discover the magic of invisible ink and the science behind chemical reactions and heat. This activity is a fun way to combine art and science, teaching kids about acids, bases, and the properties of materials.
